I was asked by Jackson's Art Supplies what my plans for the New Year were, you can find my answer for them here , but it also made me consider what I do want to achieve this year.
- Experiment with new techniques and media
- Apply for more contests and exhibition opportunities
- Write more, building up another sustained research project like Bypass Wildlife
Applying for the Emerging Artist Prize was a spur of the moment decision, an attempt at being more fearless when it comes to grabbing opportunities and it has paid off immensely and has spurred me into looking for more things I can apply for - I have just applied for the Guanlan International Print Biennial and we'll see whether anything comes from it.
The prints I submitted to Guanlan are part of a new research project I am attempting to solidify based on the life and death of my great uncle, Terence Gilchrist. I have been dipping in and out with various ideas since he passed and I have decided to begin by making a different print, image or drawing for each year of his life. I also feel the project needs a written component, for instance retelling particular memories from the perspective of each of my family members, reconstructing his life from these remembered fragments.
Another factor that is coming into play is my new job as a print technician, opening up a massive amount of resources and facilities to experiment with, so I can start doing more lithographs as well as trying etching techniques I've never used before.
